Students protest higher education laws

Students protesting against Hungary's new higher education laws marched in central Budapest on Wednesday evening, demanding the law's withdrawal.
Hundreds of students walked holding up banners from outside the Technical University building on the Danube embankment to Corvinus University and the ELTE Law Faculty building. The organising Student Network said students demanded independence for universities, a re-assessment of state-funded places and the setup of a financial assistance programme for low-income families.
Under the new changes to the law, contracts will be signed with students whose higher education studies are financed by the state requiring them to stay in Hungary for a number of years after they graduate.
