The Collegium Hungaricum in Berlin hosted a Roma event on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Berlinale film festival, where Benedek Fliegauf's film Just the Wind, inspired by Roma killings in Hungary, is in competition this year.

Cannes award-winning French director of Romani origin, Tony Gatlif, was an honorary guest at the forum attended by young European Roma filmmakers, including Hungary's Katalin Barsony.

Gatlif said that the situation of the Roma is depressing throughout Europe.

The history of the Roma and their world cannot be studied like other ethnicities are, he said. Roma artists attending the forum said they planned to set up an independent international Roma film fund. Gatlif said he fully supported the initiative. Creating dialogue between the Roma and non-Roma was of utmost importance, he added.

Fliegauf's new film will be shown on Thursday in Berlin.
