Hungary should fight its corner but still seek to strike agreements with the IMF and EU, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a speech opening the spring session of parliament on Monday.
Orban said parliament must fight the battles on behalf of the Hungarian people, even if doing so clashes with the interests or opinions of other countries. But a compromise should be sought nonetheless, he said.
In this spirit, talks with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund must get under way regarding Hungary's laws on the central bank, the legal status of ombudsmen in parliament, the laws on judges and a financial safety net, he said.
Parliament is scheduled on Monday to vote on a resolution on joining the EU's fiscal pact.
