Hungary's education policy must be changed regardless of concerns raised in Brussels and the main opposition Socialists are not pleased that the education state secretary has been called to Brussels for consultations, Socialist Party board member Agnes Kunhalmi said on Sunday.
Hungary has joined the European Union strategy which aims to reduce the ratio of early school leavers and increase the number of those that complete tertiary education, Kunhalmi said.
The education policy measures introduced in the past year and a half go against these undertakings, she said and referred to a reduction in the minimum mandatory schooling age to 16.
The simultaneous worsening of lower, medium and higher education will result in a disaster for Hungary, she said.
Androulla Vassiliou, the EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, agreed on Friday with state secretary of the Ministry of National Resources Andras Javor that education state secretary Rozsa Hoffman would pay a visit to Brussels and discuss concerns raised about Hungary's public education and higher education laws.
