Hungary wants to be a strong member of a strengthening European Union, President Schmitt said in Helsinki on Saturday, and added that if the European Commission deems certain legal changes as necessary, the Hungarian government was ready to discuss them.
Schmitt attended a meeting of his counterparts in the Arraiolos group convened to discuss challenges facing Europe.
At a press conference after the meeting, Schmitt said Hungary's Fidesz-led government had taken over the country "in such a bad state in terms of the external debt, unemployment, and corruption that nearly everything needed to be reorganised". "In a haste of legislation it was inevitable to make one or two mistakes," he added. But whenever the EU has indicated the need for corrections to be made, the Hungarian parliament has always acted on these, he said.
