Strong Europe needs strong member states to succeed in global race, says president

The European Union needs to be composed of strong member states in order to stand its ground in the global race, Hungarian President Pal Schmitt said in Helsinki on Friday.
The president and his counterparts from Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Portugal and Slovenia started a two-day meeting of the Arraiolos Group on Friday, discussing European challenges in an informal setting.
The Friday discussion focussed on ways for Europe to retain its strength, Schmitt said.
Europe needs strong member states, strong institutions, a stable identity and effective joint policies to remain a strong player in the global arena, the president said, adding that European diversity should also be respected.
