Greenpeace Hungary held a protest at the Romanian embassy in Budapest against the planned opening of a gold mine in western Romania's Rosia Montana, on Tuesday.

Greenpeace protested that the company in Rosia Montana would use the same cyanide leaching technology the Baia Mare mine in northern Romania had applied before.

Greenpeace activists placed a coffin filled with fish at the embassy entrance as a reminder to the Tisza river's disaster in 2000 and handed over a letter of protest to an embassy official.

A Romanian-Canadian corporation plans to open Europe's largest open-cast gold mine in Rosia Montana to process 330 tonnes of gold and 1,600 tonnes of silver.
